Urban Poor
BACKGROUND
Urbanization is the by-product of industrialization. In Asia, 25 % of the population were urban in 1975; this has increased to 37% in 2000 and is projected to go up to 54% by 2030
CMAI, as part of its commitment to the marginalized, its network of institutions exists in both rural and urban areas. This desk is specifically taking up urban issues, especially those relating to urban poor, as a focus area.

OBJECTIVES
- To promote in the CMAI network, community based programmes for the urban poor.
- To advocate for health issues of urban poor at national and regional forums.
- To provide the required knowledge and skills to start / strengthen community based programmes for the urban poor.
ACTIVITIES
- To promote in the CMAI network, community based programmes for the urban poor
- To identify from literature and exposure visits, key issues in urban health and approaches to address the issues
- Survey to find out the current practices in network
- Consultation to identify priorities, key strategies, and resource persons
- Develop a strategy for community based programmes for the urban poor and document.
- To advocate for health issues of urban poor at national and regional forums
- Identify advocates from the network
- Training of members in advocacy
- Identification of relevant forums
- Link the CMAI members advocates to different forums
- Assist the advocates in influencing policies
- To provide the required knowledge and skills to start / strengthen community based programmes for the urban poor.
For those who express interest, the project aims to equip and assist them as they move towards stronger community-based programs.

- Mentoring visits to those who are initiating / redesigning their work

RESULTS
- Members sensitized about community based programmes for the urban poor
- Increased recognition of health issues of urban marginalised among policy makers
- Members who are interested in community-based programmes, are identified and equipped
