Allied Health Training by Central Education Board (CEB)*

Christian Medical Association of India is pioneer in healthcare education conducting unique training programmes for more than 90 years in our country. In fact an act of parliament of India, recognizes its nursing education programme, which further acknowledges that CMAI has a pro-poor approach and substantial reach through member institutions for training of Allied Health Professionals in India. CMAI has identified specific need areas for AHP, pioneered training in them whilst ensuring relevance, high quality and affordability for all professionals. In 1927, CMAI had conducted its first certificate training in Medical Laboratory Technology at Arogyavaram Medical Center, Andhra Pradesh.

Deriving from a need to deliver quality Allied Health education, CMAI had set up the Central Education Board (CEB) of CMAI, which accredits training in several Allied Health Profession areas such as Medical Laboratory Technology, Medical Radiation Technology, Medical Record Technology, Ophthalmic Technology, Anaesthesia Technicians Technology, Post Graduate in Counselling and Addiction Therapies and much more. Each of these are administered through a training committee comprising of experts in the respective fields volunteering their time for this purpose. Each training committee designs and updates the curriculum, accredits centres, conducts examinations and certifies successful completion of the training by candidates. 

In total, there are 30 courses across 60 Training Centres in India with more than 600 students trained annually. CMAI courses are well accepted nationally and even globally for their quality and high standards. Govt Recognition of these high-quality courses is being pursued both at national and state level. CMAI’s resource books for students in Allied Health programs are recommended reading by the Manipal Academy of Higher Education. 

The Central Education Board consists of the President, General Secretary, a member appointed by each of the executive committees of the Administrators, Allied Health Professionals, Chaplains, Doctors, and Nurses Sections of CMAI, three person from the field of education appointed by the assembly, the secretaries of the Boards of Nursing of CMAI, two staff members (AHP Secretary and representative from Community Health Department), conveners of the various training committees who are not members in their own right. A total of 30 different courses are conducted under 16 training committees with the able leadership of the Conveners. 

Function of CMAI-Central Education Board (CEB): 

  • CEB is the Central Academic Body of CMAI 
  • CMAI-CEB supervises training programs and has the power to grant diplomas or certificates on behalf of the association. 
  • CMAI-CEB elects its own Chairperson and Vice Chairman. 
  • CMAI-CEB appoints sub committees for various training courses and determines the membership and functions of the committees. 
  • CMAI-CEB receives and approves the annual audited financial statement of each training sub committees. 
  • CMAI-CEB receives from the convener of each sub committee an annual report of the activities of the training committee and the progress on courses. 
  • CMAI-CEB conducts periodic inspection and accreditation of Institutions for starting and continuing courses recognized by the CMAI-CEB
  • CMAI-CEB shall do all such acts which are necessary for the well-being and administration of the Board, but not covered by the function enumerated above.

 

Salient Features of CMAI-CEB Allied Health Professional Diploma Courses 

  • CMAI runs the AHP courses under Central Education Board of CMAI, which accredits training in several Allied Health Profession areas.
  • CMAI-CEB conducts need-based training with high quality standards
  • CMAI-CEB has 2-year Diploma courses with more than 2000 hours of training and a 6-month internship which enables students to work independently after the course completion
  • CMAI-CEB has around 60 training centres across India and around 600 students complete these courses successfully each year.
  • Each training centre is attached to a hospital, so that the students get hands-on experience.
  • Currently CMAI-CEB have 30 different Allied Health Professional Courses under 16 different committees.
  • Each committee consist of experts from respective field from different renowned hospitals like CMC Hospital Vellore, St Stephen Hospital Delhi, MOSC Medical College Hospital Kolenchery, Kerala, etc. 
  • This committees set the standards, review the syllabus time to time, inspect the training centres to make sure the requirements are met.
  • Committee maintain appropriate students - tutor ratio for more impact, for some courses the ratio is 2:1
  • Each committee have controller of examination for smooth running of the course.
  • Internship is part of the curriculum which enable students to work independently after the course completion.
  • Annual tutor workshops keep the trainer updated on healthcare sector.
  • CMAI-CEB students are well accepted nationally and internationally for their quality and high standards.
